About Me

john dulworthI want to help you turn up the volume on your life!

There I said it. I just wanted to get that out of the way up front.

I know that if you’re reading about me, you’re either interested in coaching, curious about who I am and how I came to be a coach or you’re actually looking for a coach. Either way, it would be an honor to have a conversation with you. So read on and if something sparks an interest then reach out and let’s talk.

The Nuts and Bolts

I received my certification as a professional coach in 2007. Since then I’ve been in private practice and have logged over a 1000 hours working with individuals from all walks of life.

john2Prior to becoming a coach I worked as a people manager in both the retail industry and later the technology industry working for Dell, Inc. It was during those two decades that I began coaching people and building teams. I developed leadership skills and an approach to working with individuals that honored their whole self not just the parts that they brought to work.

I learned what motivated people and importantly what did not. I observed people in roles and gained an understanding of how, when and why people hide out, rise up, fit in or don’t.

I learned how to work with diversity; how to manage teams of disparate desires, wants and needs while working towards a common goal and how to hold both as vital to the success of the individual and the organization.

I learned that our work can be more than just a means to a paycheck; that our lives are played out in these environs and so living passionately within them is not only possible but essential and immensely rewarding.

I am honored by my professional background but more importantly I am strengthened by how it informs my evolving belief system, my perspective of the world and how we live in it.

A Bold Experiment

As a birthday present to myself, I decided at 40 years old to quit my job at Dell, sell my house, pack up a U-Haul and move to NYC. I would leave the only home I’d ever known; step out of the workforce (and my very comfortable comfort zone) and into the biggest experiment of my life.

It was my goal to turn my 40’s into an adventure, to live my life against a backdrop of a bold newness, to muddy the waters, shake up my fears and look finally at who I was becoming. My intent was to awaken within my life. My deep desire was to discover a professional calling the likes of which I’d never known before.

john3It was during this time I discovered Buddhist psychology and the craft of acting both of which helped me deepen and understand the transformation going on inside me. I read a lot and got back into therapy. I kept my eyes and ears open and watched as my understanding of myself grew.

It was a joy ride of discovery complete with all the elation, excitement, doubt, and fear that I was seeking to stir.
After an 18-month sabbatical, I made my way to the world of coaching. I got certified through an amazing program that took my transformation to an even deeper level and helped me to hone the craft of coaching something I’d been working on for two decades.

It was during this time that the pieces of my life began dropping into place. I started to understand the themes of my life, the trajectory I had been on and began to get glimmers of where I was headed.

Today, coaching is at the core of my life’s calling. It gives me a way to work out of my own transformation. I teach what I’ve learned and what I’m learning. I support people who are going through their own transformation — who are on a path of self-discovery.

What Makes Me An Expert?

Here’s the deal, if you’re looking for an expert, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Like you, I am on a path that has no ending. I live in a constant state of learning and evolution. I struggle with my own limitations and shortcomings just as you do. If we work together, you’ll find that I am very open and transparent about this.

The difference is, I’ve turned my transformation into a profession and in doing so, bring a level of thought and awareness that can be very helpful as you make your own way through your life.

I share this because I want you to feel at ease working with me — to feel confident that because of my experience, I can give you something meaningful that opens your life to huge possibilities. I believe ultimately you hire me for my perspective and for my ability to help you understand and shape your own. I love what my life has taught me and I look forward to sharing it with you.
