flag-dog1On this day of celebrating the red, white and blue, I am celebrating my own independence as a self-employed woman who, for 29 years, has chartered my own path as an entrepreneur.

The independence that comes from having your own business is the sweetest kind of independence, as it calls us to be the best version of ourselves in all areas of our lives. Like our founding fathers, we are called to embody the qualities of ingenuity, resolve, fortitude, creativity and integrity; not because we have to, but because we are driven to live a life of significance – one that leaves a legacy for years to come. So, on this Independence Day (the half-way point for the year), I will take two steps to re-set the trajectory of my life and business for the remaining 6 months.First, I’ll reclaim my commitment to the qualities I’ve set forth above and others that are dear to me. I’ll look to see where I am living these qualities or falling short and then, with gentle loving kindness, I will look for ways to bring them into the fabric of my day. As I do this, I’ll look to see the impact of how the simple act of consciously embodying the qualities that are important to us, can infuse our life with more meaning, love, contribution and success.

Second, I’ll pause to reflect on the 7 areas of my life; my health and wellness, work in the world, financial, relationships, environment, spiritual and play. I’ll look to see what I am celebrating and where I want something to shift. I’ll reclaim my short term intentions for each and then go about weaving into my day, the elements that will create the simple and small changes adding up to meaningful shifts that positively impact the quality of my life.

What does all this have to do with Independence Day you might ask? Everything! Like the privilege of living in this great country of ours, it is a privilege to rise every morning and be in complete control of how I design my day, what work I will do and with whom I will spend my time.  And like our founding fathers, this privilege is born out of a clear vision of what’s possible, a desire to do what it takes to make it happen and an unfathomable determination to take on the challenges that are an inevitable part of claiming one’s independence.

So on this day of independence and a halfway point for the year, what are you doing to move closer to your own independence? Whatever it is… do it with a sense of gratitude for the vision, commitment and courage of those who laid the foundation for your right to do so.
